Bridge #116 – Bucklerburn Suspension Bridge

Client: Glenorchy Trails Trust
Location: Glenorchy, Otago, New Zealand
Completed: Winter 2025
Project Type: Pedestrian Suspension Bridge – Design & Build
Length: 48 metres

Project Overview:

The Bucklerburn Suspension Bridge is the 116th bridge completed by Abseil Access, located just south of Glenorchy, near Queenstown, where the Buckler Burn cuts through a narrow alpine gorge.

The adjacent road bridge was too narrow to safely accommodate pedestrians, prompting the Glenorchy Trails Trust to engage Abseil Access directly to deliver an economical and structurally efficient suspension bridge solution for the local trail network.

This 48-metre span forms part of the new Glenorchy Trail, offering a vital crossing for both hikers and cyclists along the northern edge of Lake Wakatipu, with views into Fiordland National Park.

Design & Construction Highlights:

  • Suspension bridge with 1.5m wide deck to support two-way cycle and pedestrian traffic
  • 10-person load capacity
  • Galvanised rigid steel frames to enhance deck stability and wind resistance
  • FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) decking – ideal for long-term performance in alpine environments
  • 11m-deep load-tested rock anchors (x2) for secure anchoring into the gorge
  • 5m-deep piles under tower foundations to ensure structural integrity on variable terrain

The project presented unique engineering and environmental challenges, including alpine conditions and remote site access during the depths of a Southern Alps winter. Despite this, our 3-man crew based in the nearby village of Glenorchy completed the build in just six weeks.

Several design options were considered during planning, including reuse of the original road bridge abutments, before finalising the most efficient and cost-effective approach.

Project Outcome:

“Abseil Access Ltd were a pleasure to work with on the Buckler Burn suspension bridge project. Their team worked closely with the Glenorchy Trails Trust to deliver a stunning 48m bridge that met both our budget and design needs — friendly, professional, and a great result in a truly scenic location.” — Glenorchy Trails Trust

The Bucklerburn Bridge enhances the safety and connectivity of the Glenorchy Trail and stands as a testament to the skill, adaptability, and endurance of the Abseil Access bridge team. Delivered on time, within budget, and in harsh winter conditions, this project reflects our ongoing commitment to building durable infrastructure in remote and challenging locations.
