Replacement of backcountry bridge in Mt. Aspiring National Park,
including decommissioning and removal of existing bridge. Working
through freezing temperatures, driving rain and sunshine the team
got the full spectrum of conditions to deliver a bridge in a remote yet
popular track near Wanaka.
The work included:
• Fabrication of Steel bridge structure, procurement of all materials
• Prefabricated Deadman anchors and workshop applied corrosion protection.
• Planning and construction of backcountry bridge in Mt. Aspiring National Park
• Living in a remote hut
• Excavated foundations in mountainous ground conditions
• Helicopter lifting of all plant and materials
• FRP decking
AA site team mobilized along the river valley using 4WD vehicles and farm machinery to
reduce the requirement for helicopter lifting. The site team were accommodated in the
nearby DOC hut for project duration. The team conducted all excavations, demolition and
construction including hand mixed re-enforced concrete foundations.
At the end of the project, Abseil Access were on hand to assist with the load test which
was carried out by the Department of Conservations Engineering Team.
